World Menstrual Hygiene Day: ATBEF meets young people to change the rules
Every May 28, World Menstrual Hygiene Day offers a unique opportunity to lift the veil on a long-ignored subject: menstruation. In 2025, the Association Togolaise pour le Bien-Être Familial (ATBEF) marked the day by stepping up its awareness-raising activities among young people, both in and out of school.
Two target groups benefited from interactive and educational workshops: young people from the Togo-Suisse NGO in Davié in the Maritime region, and out-of-school youth from the Kara region. These meetings helped to demystify menstruation by tackling key themes without taboos: understanding the menstrual cycle, appropriate use of sanitary protection, intimate hygiene, but also the social and psychological issues linked to menstruation.
These activities are part of the EmpoWHER project, an initiative led by ATBEF in the Maritime and Kara regions, aimed at empowering young girls and women through access to information and appropriate services.
By breaking down the barriers of silence and stigmatization, ATBEF is pursuing its commitment to a more inclusive society, where menstruation is no longer a source of shame but a natural stage of life fully understood and respected.
ATBEF, for a better life!
