Capacity-Building

In 2014, ATBEF inaugurated its learning center focused on its expertise in contraceptive technology. Through an effective partnership with the Government of Togo, we are enhancing the capacity of health service providers. Each year, we supervise nearly 90 internships for students from national midwifery schools and medical assistants. In 2015, ATBEF hosted three missions to share experiences in favour of Senegalese, Congolese and Burkinabe health professionals. ATBEF has trained health professionals on community-based family planning, including the use of the injectable method. With funding from USAID, the Agir PF project enhances the capacity of the ATBEF clinical team on the basis of a self-study document.

Our achievements

For the past 40 years, ATBEF has been working for sexual and reproductive health and rights, contributing to 20% of the country's protection years couples by 2014. Its effective financial and programmatic management is regularly evaluated by the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), the Ministry of Health of Togo and USAID.

- In 2015, our 05 static clinics, 02 mobile clinics and community based distribution sites provide 948,000 health services, 69% of which are targeted at youth

- In 2015, we distributed 1.5 million contraceptives, including injectables.

- Since 2012, we have been pioneering the provision of vasectomy services in Togo with 378 services to 184 clients.

- Along with our networks, we advocate for better policies and adequate SRHR resources to create an enabling environment in Togo.

- Since 2011, contraceptive services have doubled in Haho health district with 112 villages, reducing unmet need for family planning and leading to an increase in the Couple Year Protection to 70%. This is the result of strong advocacy by ATBEF towards the Ministry of Health and community mobilization to recruit Community Health Workers who were then trained in injectable technology, thus strengthening the package of services offered in family planning at the community level. In addition, traditional leaders of the villages involved reported significant behavioural changes, noting a decrease in household disputes and greater empowerment of women. Currently, this pilot project has been scaled up in the health districts of Vo, Yoto, Ogou, Zio and Avé.

Social franchise

ATBEF has pioneered the use of social franchising with the private sector in Togo to increase the reach of its services in the community, while ensuring compliance with norms and standards. Our social franchise network includes 9 private clinics offering family planning, post-abortion care and HIV/AIDS testing and care. We train health providers, provide the necessary equipment, ensure a constant supply of drugs and reproductive health products and maintain and respect norms and standards through monitoring and supervision. Our intention is to leverage private sector infrastructure to achieve public health objectives. In doing so, social franchising broadens the range of services offered in the private sector, improving the quality of these services and increasing access for underserved populations.
