Preventing early pregnancy and sexual violence: a stronger commitment in Togo

2025-02-21

On Friday, February 21, 2025, the Association Togolaise pour le Bien-Être Familial (ATBEF) marked the closure of the project “Approches multisectorielles de prévention des grossesses précoces et violences sexuelles sur les adolescentes au sein des communes du Togo” at an official ceremony at the Hôtel École Lébénè in Lomé.

Implemented over a period of more than three years, with financial support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), this project covered 50 communes and reached 250 schools. Its main objective was to strengthen mechanisms for preventing teenage pregnancy and sexual violence, by involving the various players in society: local authorities, schools, parents, civil society organizations and communities.
Through a multi-sectoral approach, the project has enabled the implementation of awareness-raising activities, training for teachers and educators, and the improvement of care and support services for young girls who are victims of violence. Several awareness-raising campaigns were conducted in schools and communities to promote responsible behavior and a protective environment for adolescent girls.
The closing ceremony was attended by representatives of the relevant ministries, local elected representatives, civil society players and project beneficiaries. This high level of participation testifies to the collective commitment to the fight against teenage pregnancy and sexual violence.
The event was marked by the presentation of certificates of recognition to key players in the project, including educators, health professionals and community leaders who have contributed to its success. In recognition of their commitment, several local elected officials were also awarded trophies, saluting their active involvement in implementing prevention initiatives in their respective communities.
In addition to the official closing ceremony, the meeting provided an opportunity for the various stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to continuing the efforts already underway. Discussions highlighted the progress made and the challenges still to be met to ensure lasting protection for adolescent girls against the risks of early pregnancy and sexual violence.
ATBEF and its partners insisted on the importance of continuity in the actions initiated, by reinforcing the involvement of communities and public institutions in setting up sustainable systems. Raising awareness and educating people about sexual and reproductive health, as well as improving care services for victims, remain priorities in order to guarantee a safer environment conducive to the development of young girls in Togo.
In closing this project, ATBEF and its partners reaffirm their determination to continue the fight against violence and teenage pregnancy, while calling for the continued mobilization of all those involved.
