Doufelgou community leaders commit to youth rights
As part of the implementation of the EMPOWHER project, funded by the Canadian government, ATBEF organized a capacity-building workshop for 20 community and religious leaders, including 15 canton chiefs from the Doufelgou prefecture, on February 14, 15 and 17, 2025 at the Niamtougou Chambre des Métiers.
The aim of the workshop was to provide these leaders with information on the challenges faced by adolescents and young people in terms of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and to support them in drawing up a Community Charter for the protection of young people, adapted to the realities of their respective cantons.
At the end of the work, the canton chiefs signed the Charter for the protection of young people's SRHR rights, formalizing their commitment to applying the “Niamtougou Declaration”. Through this declaration, they pledge to promote sexual and reproductive health rights, by raising awareness in their communities of the importance of these rights for the well-being of young people.
They also reaffirm their commitment to reinforcing gender equality, by ensuring that girls and boys benefit from the same opportunities and protections, whatever their living environment. The protection of young girls occupies a central place in this declaration, with the aim of eliminating all forms of discrimination and harmful practices that could hinder their development.
Finally, this initiative aims to foster harmonious community development by integrating SRHR into all social, cultural and religious activities. Through this collective commitment, the community and religious leaders of Doufelgou reaffirm their determination to create a safer, more inclusive environment for adolescents and young people.
ATBEF, for a better life!
